Token Approvals Explained on Base

Why token approvals matter, what they authorize, and how to review them responsibly.

Why this matters on Base

An approval gives a contract permission to spend a specified token balance under the rules of that approval. Reviewing old approvals can reduce exposure to applications you no longer use.

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 environment with its own network balances, applications and token representations.

Base is part of the Ethereum scaling ecosystem. The same ticker can exist on Ethereum and on Base as separate token contracts, so a balance seen on one network cannot be assumed to exist, or to be redeemable at the same value, on the other.

Base: what to pay attention to

  • Security: Use trusted interfaces and verify destination network and token before signing.
  • Assets and tokens: Verify the token contract on Base and do not rely on ticker or logo alone.
  • Costs: Consider Base transaction costs together with bridge and route costs when moving small balances.

A Base checklist for this topic

  • Treat unexpected tokens or links that appear in a Base wallet as untrusted until verified.
  • Review and revoke permissions you no longer use on Base, especially unlimited approvals.
  • Check the domain you are on before connecting a wallet for any Base action.
  • Send a small test amount first when an address or route on Base is new to you.
A signature is a decision. If a request cannot be explained in plain words, it is not ready to be signed.

Bridge from Base

Consider Base transaction costs together with bridge and route costs when moving small balances. On the Optimism side: verify the Optimism contract address for the asset you intend to move.

The bridge guide below is informational; any transaction depends on current network conditions and the route shown in the bridge interface.
