Crypto Bridge Glossary on Ethereum
A plain-English glossary of common terms used in cross-chain transfers.
Why this matters on Ethereum
Bridge terminology can be confusing because providers use different names for similar steps. Learning the core vocabulary makes route comparisons easier.
Ethereum is an EVM network and the base layer for a large ecosystem of tokens, applications and Layer 2 networks.
Ethereum uses EVM-style addresses and token contracts, which means the same address can hold balances on several EVM networks at once. A balance that is missing on Ethereum may simply be sitting on a different network.
Ethereum: what to pay attention to
- Costs: Ethereum gas can make very small balance movements uneconomical, so compare total execution cost with the balance value.
- Security: Pay close attention to contract approvals, transaction details and the exact domain used to initiate a transaction.
- Assets and tokens: Verify the ERC-20 contract address and distinguish Ethereum-native assets from representations on other networks.
A Ethereum checklist for this topic
- Review the final recipient address and network before confirming a cross-chain transfer.
- Confirm both the source and destination network, including whether Ethereum is one of them.
- Compare the quote, the minimum received amount and the total fees before signing.
- Check that the token you hold on Ethereum is supported for the route you are considering.
Bridge from Ethereum
Ethereum gas can make very small balance movements uneconomical, so compare total execution cost with the balance value. On the Polygon side: confirm that the token is held on Polygon and verify its contract before moving or swapping it.
The bridge guide below is informational; any transaction depends on current network conditions and the route shown in the bridge interface.
