Wallet Security Basics for Everyday Web3 on Ethereum

A straightforward security checklist covering approvals, contract addresses, signing, and backups.

Why this matters on Ethereum

Good wallet security is mostly about reducing avoidable signing mistakes. A read-only balance check should never require a seed phrase, and unfamiliar approvals deserve extra scrutiny.

Ethereum is an EVM network and the base layer for a large ecosystem of tokens, applications and Layer 2 networks.

Ethereum uses EVM-style addresses and token contracts, which means the same address can hold balances on several EVM networks at once. A balance that is missing on Ethereum may simply be sitting on a different network.

Ethereum: what to pay attention to

  • Security: Pay close attention to contract approvals, transaction details and the exact domain used to initiate a transaction.
  • Assets and tokens: Verify the ERC-20 contract address and distinguish Ethereum-native assets from representations on other networks.
  • Costs: Ethereum gas can make very small balance movements uneconomical, so compare total execution cost with the balance value.

A Ethereum checklist for this topic

  • Review and revoke permissions you no longer use on Ethereum, especially unlimited approvals.
  • Check the domain you are on before connecting a wallet for any Ethereum action.
  • Send a small test amount first when an address or route on Ethereum is new to you.
  • Verify the contract address on Ethereum from an independent source rather than a ticker or a logo.
A signature is a decision. If a request cannot be explained in plain words, it is not ready to be signed.

Bridge from Ethereum

Ethereum gas can make very small balance movements uneconomical, so compare total execution cost with the balance value. On the Polygon side: confirm that the token is held on Polygon and verify its contract before moving or swapping it.

The bridge guide below is informational; any transaction depends on current network conditions and the route shown in the bridge interface.
